LGBTQ Advocacy Resources

GLAAD - LGBTQ advocacy and cultural change

GLAAD – the world’s largest Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) media advocacy organization – increases media accountability and community engagement that ensures authentic LGBTQ stories are seen, heard, and actualized.

GLAAD’s founders battled discrimination with facts and compassion from the start, as the handful of journalists in 1985 saw family members dying of AIDS, a government unwilling to help, and inflammatory headlines overwhelming newsstands. GLAAD has had a direct impact on inspiring positive LGBTQ cultural representation by nurturing understanding and holding social media platforms accountable for misinformation.

HRC - Human Rights Campaign

As the nation’s largest LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, we drive impact by inspiring, engaging and mobilizing millions of pro-equality voters and supporters to elect pro-equality leaders and to demand equity-based policies and legislation; changing hearts and minds through programming that increases understanding, visibility and support for the diverse LGBTQ+ community in all aspects of our identities.

Through our work we're transforming the institutions and systems that shape our everyday lives by advancing LGBTQ+ inclusive policies and practices in schools, workplaces, hospitals, communities and beyond.

ACLU - The American Civil Liberties Union of Texas

No matter the color of our skin, the languages we speak, or where we were born, every person in Texas deserves to feel safe and be treated with dignity.

Yet, we are witnessing escalating attacks by politicians on border and immigrant communities at the state and federal levels — putting people across Texas at greater risk of racial profiling, harassment, and arrest.

Regardless of your immigration status, you have rights under our Constitution.

Let’s protect ourselves and those we love by knowing our rights.

LGBTQ+ Life in College: Identity, Belonging, and Support

Coming to college can be a powerful turning point for LGBTQ+ students. For many, it is the first time they have space to explore identity, build community, and decide if, when, and how to come out. At the same time, college can bring real challenges, including navigating new social environments, balancing family expectations, dealing with campus climate, and managing mental health, safety, and basic needs. There is no single “right” way to be LGBTQ+ in college, and every student’s journey looks different.

The resources collected in this article reflect that diversity of experiences. They include research studies that examine LGBTQ+ students’ sense of belonging, well-being, food insecurity, and experiences at community colleges, universities, and religiously affiliated institutions.
